  45. Northwest Mississippi Community College opened<br>
  46. its new DeSoto Center only minutes from Olive<br>
  47. Branch in late 1995. The Center is designed to<br>
  48. accomodate overe 1,400 students at a time, with<br>
  49. 25 classrooms, four computer labs, two science<br>
  50. labs, one practical nursing lab, a spacious<br>
  51. library and other facilities.<br>

  60. Northwest also offers a Skill/Tech program to,

  62. skills of the available labor pool and the
  63. performance needs opf area employers.

  83. DeSoto Students beat U.S. average

  87. DeSoto County Schools students scored better
  88. than state and national averages in achievement
  89. tests taken in the fall of 1998.
  90. District test coordinator Peggy Slaugther
  91. credited the improvement on the Iowa Test of
  92. Basic Skills, the Test of Achievement and
  93. Proficiency and the Functional Literacy Exam to
  94. "students' hard work and parents being
  95. concerned."
  96. In composite test scores that include reading,
  97. language and math, DeSoto County fourth-graders
  98. scored in the 54th percentile nationally, which
  99. means they scored equal to or better than 54
  100. percent of other students. In 1997,
  101. fourth-graders scored in the 53rd percentile.
  102. Fifth-graders scored in the 54th percentile, up
  103. from the 52nd percentile in 1997; sixth-graders
  104. were in the 55th percentile, dipping from the
  105. 56th; seventh-graders scored in the 57th
  106. percentile, up from the 55th; eight-graders
  107. scored in the 57th percentile, up from the
  108. 55th.
  109. Ninth-graders took the Test of Achievements and
  110. Proficency and scored in the 54th percentile,
  111. compared with the 50th the preceeding year.
  112. In Mississippi students must take the
  113. Functional Literacy Exam and score at least 770
  114. percent to graduate from high school. In DeSoto
  115. County 96 percent of students passed in 1998,
  116. compared with 94 percent in 1997.
